Have you ever looked up at the moon and thought you saw the silhouette of a bunny?Long ago, high in the vast sky, there was a bunny who was ever so lonely. She spent her days traversing the barren lands of the moon—pounding mochi, making mooncakes, and, on occasion, crafting elixirs of immortality for the heavens. Eventually, she grew bored, being alone with nobody to talk to. To help pass the time, she took out her mortar and pestle along with her usual ingredients. She spent hours pounding mochi, shaping it, and even drawing a cute little face. Once satisfied with the result, she reached for a flask of elixir. Slowly, she began to pour. With six drops, her mochi creation started to gain consciousness. She had created a sentient mochi, whom she named QQ after his irresistible, bouncy texture.Though she tried to eat him on multiple occasions, they eventually grew friendlier with each other, telling silly stories to pass the time. After some small talk, they discovered that they both loved to sing and dance! With their newfound shared interests (and lots of time to spend), their days were filled with joy as they became the closest of friends. Some time passed. The air on the moon was filled with relative peace and quiet, apart from the occasional squabbling between the two best friends. However, one day, the bunny heard noises that were definitely not coming from QQ, who was taking a peaceful nap. Heading toward the source of the sound, she heard an unfamiliar voice: that of a young woman. She was crying, her whimpers soft but unmistakable. The moon bunny, with kind green eyes resembling jade, approached cautiously.Offering the young woman head pats and freshly-made mochi, the bunny consoled her. After a couple of minutes of comfortable silence, the bunny spoke. “My name is Yue. What's yours?”Wiping away her tears, the woman introduced herself as Chang’e. Slowly, through deep breaths, she began to tell her story of how she ended up on the moon. It turned out her husband, Hou Yi, was a hero back on Earth. The lands below were being ravaged by the heat of ten suns. Their rays dried up the soil, making crops shrivel into husks. Hou Yi was tasked by the Emperor to shoot down nine of the ten suns. With the crisis averted, the Emperor gifted Hou Yi two pills of immortality, crafted from Yue’s elixirs. Take one pill, and you would be granted immortality. One day, while Hou Yi was out hunting, one of his apprentices attempted to steal the pills for himself. Luckily, Chang’e was home and heard the commotion. While the burglar ransacked the house, Chang’e decided to consume both pills to keep them from him. Suddenly, her feet lifted from the ground, and she began to float into the air. By the time Hou Yi returned home, she had already drifted up to the moon. Now stranded on the moon, Chang’e found refuge in the company that Yue and QQ provided. Little by little, she opened up about her life on Earth. She told tales of family, friends, enemies, and lovers. Yue and QQ always listened intently, their curiosity about the human world growing with each story.Years, decades, centuries went by. Finally, Yue carefully prompted Chang’e with a question. “Chang’e, do you believe Hou Yi is still out there?”The now-renowned moon goddess hesitated, then nodded softly. “I do. Though it has been centuries, I hold onto the hope that his soul is still out there, trying to reach me. If only I could…” Her words drifted into an accepting silence, knowing she could never return to Earth.“Hey, what about me? I-I could go down to Earth to find him! I’ll do everything it takes! I’ll tell him Chang’e misses him and holds him dear even after all these years!” Yue said, trying to cheer up her beloved friend. The moon goddess’s eyes lit up at the thought. Agreeing, Chang’e bestowed Yue with a special blessing—a gift that allowed her to take the form of a human. However, there was one caveat: she would need to return to the moon for one week each year during the Mid-Autumn Festival to pound mochi and make mooncakes in preparation for the festivities. This arrangement would also allow Chang’e to receive updates from Yue on the whereabouts of her late husband.Understanding her new responsibilities, Yue, along with her companion QQ, entered the modern era and turned to the internet. Yue decided that streaming would allow her to reach across the world and search for the reincarnation of Hou Yi, all in hopes of reuniting the long lost lovers once more.
